Hydrocarbons: cycloalkanes, alkenes and arenes

Cycloalkanes, alkenes and arenes.

?

Cycloalkanes

  • Have the general formula CnH2n
  • Name ends in -ane
  • Are saturated - all the bonds between carbon atoms are single bonds
  • Are not aromatic - they don't have a benzene ring

Alkenes

  • Have the general formula CnH2n
  • Name ends in -ene
  • Are unsaturated - there are one (or more) double bonds between carbon atoms in a molecule
  • Are aliphatic - they don't have ring structures
