How to Answer Source Questions

?

PLANNING

Step 1:

  • Read the question (Agree or Disagree)
  • Evaluate (judge) - make a decision
  • Questions will usually begin like this -> 'Using the Source, evaluate the view that ....'

Step 2:

  • Highlight the points for and against on the source

Step 3:

  • Divising a brief plan: make a table (for and against) & pair competing arguments

Step 4:

  • Allow adequate time to complete the first 3 steps

INTRODUCTION & A01

Introduction:

  • Direction (simply answering the question)
  • Don't use 'I think' or 'In my opinion'. Instead use: 'The direction of this essay will be to argue that...'

Step 5: DEFINE (the topic), DISCUSS (outline the arguments from the source), DIRECTION (answer the question)

  • Use arguments from the source (quote the source) - shows the examiners you're using the source
  • Have 2 competing source arguments. Start with the weaker argument so you can challenge the weak argument, therefore you will have more detail
  • Combining A03 language with persuasive language:
  • Don't use 'The source claims that...' , instead use 'The source wrongly/correctly claims that..'
  • Develop each argument with examples

A02 & CONCLUSION

  • 'However' - about to change the argument
  • 'This argument is relevant to the question because...' - explain why the argument is weak/strong

Using persuasive language A03:

  • Starting the paragraph with a weak argument and end with a stronger argument
  • Sustained argument - knowing which argument you're with - link it back to the question after each point

The conclusion should MATCH the direction:

  • Repeat the exact same arguments
  • reconfirm what you think between stronger and weaker arguments

Summary:

  • Introduction, 6 arguments (2 competing with each other), Conclusion
