Can propose amendments to bills- except money bills.

If Commons refuses to accept wishes of Lords, Lords either back down or delay bill for 1 year- War Crimes Act (1991)

House of Lords Act (1999)- all but 99 hereditary peers remain.

Life Peerages Act (1963)- Hereditary peers renounce their titles.

Life Peerage Act (1958)- gives right to apoint peers for life.

Independent House of Lords appointment committee set up.

Have expertise in areas- former ministers.
