Hormones - FSH

  • Produced in the pituitary gland
  • Matures the egg in one of the ovaries
  • Stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen

Hormones - Oestrogen

  • Produced in the ovaries
  • Causes pituitary gland to produce LH
  • Inhibits further release of FSH

Hormones - LH

  • Produced in the pituitary gland
  • Stimulates the release of an egg at around the middle of the menstrual cycle

Fertility Prevention

  • Oestrogen can prevent the release of an egg - when oestrogen levels are high, it inhibits the production of FSH and after a while egg development stops and stays stopped
  • Progesterone stimulates production of thick cervical mucus which prevents sperm getting in 
  • The pill is a mixture of high levels of oestrogen and progesterone

Increasing Fertility

  • FSH and LH can be injectedto stimulate the relase of an egg

IVF 

  • IVF can be used to get infertile couples pregnant
