· Most Americans believed that the government should not interfere in the lives of ordinary citizens and that the individual was responsible for his or her fate. This theory was called ‘rugged individualism’
· In Russia in 1917 the Bolshevik Revolution led to the establishment of a communist government
· Events such as the strikes in 1919 and the Bomb outrages led to further fears of a Communist revolution. This led to Palmer Raids of 1920 which resulted in several hundred Russian immigrants being sent back
· The idea of the government taking control of land, property and industry was disgusting to the majority of Americans
· Many Americans believed that revolutionary ideas were being brought to the USA by immigrants, especially from Eastern Europe
· The Press and the newspapers were partially responsible for whipping up public feeling and making people believe that Communism was a threat
