When: (fleeing of east germans) from late 40's to early 60's  (ultimatum in 1958)

Who: Khrushchev & Eisenhower

Why: Soviet union did not like the existance of capitalism within its zone- (west Berlin)

The East Germany goverment was not popular- not good standard of living

What: the fleeing of high skilled people from East Germany

Khrushchev enforced his six month ultimatum- USA out of Berlin

Then removed it

Bad relations when US spy plane is shot down over russia- dislayed at Paris Summit

Then put it back on again- due to Krushchevs assumptions that new President Kennedy would be a push over.

Then: UK and US did airlift of supplies for around a year

The Berlin wall was formed on the 12th of August 61

When: 1962

Who: Kennedy, Castro ( cuban communist revolutionalist), Khrushchev

Why: After cuban revolution the US refused to trade with Cuba, instead CIA carried out a failed assasination of Castro, so in fear of another attack Castro whent to Khrushchev for help

What: Khrushchev put long range nuclear missiles in Cuba

Naval blockades

Then: US and Soviet Union make deal- if US remove their missiles in Turkey, Siviet union remove missiles in Cuba

Establishes "hot line"

No testing of nuclear missiles above ground or underwater
