wall street crash

The wall street crash meant that American loans of 25 million marks had to be paid of in 90 days!

  • the depression in America affected Germany becuase the Americans had lent Germany alot of money and they wanted it back
  • After WW1 America lent germany some money, when America started to become depressed as businesses were not working out they demanded this money back! America was so desperate for they money they demaded it to be piad back within 90 days this was basically impossible.
  • In order to try get this money back the German banks tried to take money out of the German  buisnesses, which couldnt pay in result of this the buisnneses went bankrupt.
  • People in germany were then soon living on the streets jobless, hungry, angry and full of resentment.

the growth of the Nazi party (part 1)

Factor 1:the depression, Hitler used the wall street crash as a great oppourtunity to gain votes from the public. Not many people paid much attention to Hitler in the 1920's but when everyone was so down about the depression they started to listen. The nazis preached their core beilefs

  • the treaty of versailles was a crime to Germany
  • the jews should be blammed for the economic problems
  • Germany should be reborn as a strong and powerful country

Factor 2:Germans were unhappy with the weimar government, The weimar governemnt could never agree on how to get Germany out of the depression so very little got done to try help Geramany. one of the chancellors called Bruning was passing laws, by using the Presidents emergency decrees and making them legal under article 48. however when bruning tried to pass laws to siexe rich peoples land to give it to the poor Hidenburg quickly withdrawed as he himself was rich and owned land

Factor 3: The appeal of Adolf Hitler, Hitler was a charasmatic person and many people liked him, he made people belive that he could be trusted to make Germany a great nation. As a powerful, inspiring speaker he gave people hope that Germany could be great again.

the growth of the Nazi party (part 2)

factor 4:fear of the rise of other German extremist parties such as the communistsIn 1917 there had been a communist revolution in Russia, the communist party took over all the buisnesses and farms. There had been attempts by Geramn communists to take over germany in the years after the end of first world war 1 too. The impact that the communists would have on middle and upper clas germans frigtened them as they didnt want to loose thier wealth and position in society. Churchgoers also felt threatened too as communists didnt believe in religious institutions. Hitler promised to fight communism so middle and upper class voted for Hitler aswell as churchgoers as they all felt threatened by communism. Hitler sent the (SA) to fight with communist gangs

factor 5: nazi party structure, methods and tactics Hitler thought he could become Germany's ruler by leading armed soldiers in a revolution. He tried this in 1923 in Munich Putsch but failed. He realised that he needed to win power legally and therefore started trying to win votes at elections, to build up support he did many things like

  • Nazi party offices were set up all over germany to encourage loyal folllowers. There were 100,000 men in the SA during 1931 and in 1932 there was 400,000.
  • Nazi propaganda was really important, they made use of new media like radio broadcasts and cinema news reports to encourage people to follow the nazi pary aswell as leaflets and posters veing printed everywhere to influence Germans ways of thinking.
  • Hitler himself took part in paradesto show of the Nazi power and also made powerful speeches
  • The hitler youth organisation was set up to encourage younger followers
