Spain

  • Vergil "Henry was more inclined towards peace than war"

Aims

  • wanted legitamcy for his dynasty
  • wanted an ally against a possible foreign Invasion
  • wanted an ally aginst internal pretenders

Treaty

  • 1489 - Medina del Campo
  • Spain major power by late C15th
  • negotations began in 1488 
  • Terms were that Cathrine would marry Authur and Spain would pay a large Dowry
  • Isabella and Ferdiand would not support pretenders
  • both would support each other if a war with France emreged

succces lay in the Tudors begin acknowldged as a major family

  • Authur marrued Cathrine in 1501
  • Authur died in 1502 = Isabella atmtpted to repalce Authur with Henry
  • Treaty bethrothes Henry and Cathrine  in 1503

France

  • 1487 - Charles VIII bethrothed to anne the heir of Brittany
  • Charles VIII invaded Brittany to gain control
  • Brittany asked for Henrys help but recived support from Spain and Maximillian
  • Henry sent 500 troops under Scales to Britanny and tried to secure peace between the two - owing them both loyalties
  • Defeat at Battle of St Aubin du Cromier = Treaty of Stable = Brittany acknowleged Frances lordship + Charles had control over marriage

War with France

  • Treaty of Redon - Henry sends 6000 troops to Brittany
  • 1491 Brittany accepted defeat = Anne married to Charles
  • Henry now had to invade as not to look weak
  • Invaded France Oct 1492 with 27,000 men
  • 9 days later Charles offered peace in the Treaty of Estaples
  • France promised to stop supporting Pretenders and give £5,000 a year in a pension

Scotland

  • After failure of Warbeck and Scotish invasion in 1497 both agree to peace
  • Treaty of Ayton in 1497
  • And then Ratified in 1502
  • Agreed that Margret his daughter would marry James V
  • Agreed that Scotland would not support Pretenders or invade England
  • However, Auld alliacne still existed, therefore being somewhat threatening
  • Highly succesful as it secured northern border and was the first truce since C14th

Burgundy

  • Originaly main Trading patner
  • However, Margret and Maximillian support both Simnel and Warbeck against Henry
  • Henry places an embargo on Margret and Dutch Traders in 1493
  • Low countires respond with a Counter embargo
  • Signifcantyl Hurts English trade during this period

Following Treaties

  • in 1496 Philip signs the Magnus Intercursus which ends the embargo - supported by Dutch Merchants
  • in 1506 Philip agrees to the Malus Intercursus
  • He signs for a trade agreement which is highly favourable towards the English
  • He also agrees to Stop supporting pretenders and hand over Suffolk to Henry
