Diabetes

Diabetes is the condition where sufferers are not able to control their blood glucose levels. 

Type 2 diabetes 

  • Can still produce inisulin but the body no longer responds to it 

Type 1 diabetes 

  • Cannot produce enough insulin for the bodies needs/ requirements

Type 1 Diabetes

The pancreas cells in the body either produce little or no insulin. 

Timeline:

  • Develops during childhood
  • Unknown cause - theories of the body's immune system attacking pancreas cells.

Treatment:

  • Main treatment is to inject insulin (when blood glucose levels rise too high) 
  • Management of diets and exercising regularly to keep glood glucose levels as steady as possible.

Type 2 Diabetes

The pancreas still produces isulin but the body no longer responds to it 

Timeline:

  • Develops later in life 
  • Old age and being overweight are two primary risk factors

Treatment:

  • Injecting insulin not a treatment option as the body no longer responds to insulin. 
  • Must manage diets and exercise regularly to keep blood glucose levels steady
