Hydrolysis of Halogenoalkanes.

Hydrolysed by reacting with solution of hot aqueous OH-(aq) to produce an alcohol.

This is the mechanism of nucleophillic substitution.

eg. CH3CH2CH2I(aq) + OH-(aq) ----------->> CH3CH2CH2OH(aq) + I-(aq)

OH- has a lone pair of electrons, therefore donates a pair of electrons to the slightly positive carbon and the O of the OH.

Forming a new covalent bond between the C and the O.

Heterolytic bond fission.
