A brief discription of Halliday's functions of child language, hopefully this will help :)

Instrumental

Language used to satisy a child's needs.

e.g. "give juice!"

Regulatory

Language used to control others around them

e.g. "pick me up!"

Interactional

Phatic talk.

e.g. "how are you?" , "I'm fine"

Personal

Language used to express themselves as people; usually by giving their opinions.

e.g. "I like pie!"

Representational

Language used to relay information

e.g. "i have wet myself"

Heuristic

Language used to learn about the environment.

e.g. "what's that called?"

Imaginitive

Language used to explore the imagination

e.g. "i'm a princess in a castle".
