Economic Effects

  • 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. 
  • The port, other major roads and communications link were damaged beyond repair and needed replacing.
  • The clothing industry, which accounts for two-thirds of Haiti's exports, reported structural damage at manufacturing facilities.
  • Clothing factories destroyed- damaging economy as 60% of Haiti's exports
    are clothes
  • It is estimated the 1 in 5 jobs were lost as a result of the quake

Social Effects

  • 316,000 people died
  • About 100,000 houses were destroyed and 200,000 damaged in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area
  •  Around 1.3 million Haitians were displaced (left homeless)
  • Displaced people moved into tents and temporary shelters, and there were concerns about outbreaks of disease.
  • By November 2010, there were outbreaks of Cholera
  •  1yr later, cholera epidemic kills 3000 people as sewage and water facilities have not been fixed
  • 50 hospitals damaged- Port Au Prince only had 8 hospitals before earthquake and all these were badly damaged.
  • Prison damaged- 4000 inmates escaped
