  • Adult Literacy rate 53% for over 15's
  • 46% had access to clean water
  • Poorest country in western hemisphere
  • 66% of Haitians live less than £1 a day

Immediate Affects of Earthquake:

  • 7.0 magnitude earthquake
  • 1.5 million people made homeless, 3 million affected overall
  • 1 in 5 lost their jobs because of the earthquake
  • The prison was destroyed and 4000 inmates escaped
  • 220,000 people estimated to have died
  • $430 million given by the US and the EU
  • 4.3 million people provided with rations

  • 98% of rubble not cleared restricting access
  • 1 million still homeless after a year
  • Reduced conditions lead to Cholera outbreak in October, 210,000 infected
  • Improved water supply to 350,000 people
  • Only 20% of aid was spent by the corrupt government
