THE NOBLE GASES

- Are in group 8 (or 0) of the periodic table.

- They are inert. This means it is very difficult to get them to react with anything.

- all these elements have a FULL OUTER SHELL!!!!!!!!

- Because of this, it is very hard to get them to react with anything.

He- Helium

Ne- Neon

Ar- Argon

Kr- Krypton

Xe- Xenon

Rn- Radon

USES OF THE NOBLE GASES

They are useful because they are unreactive.

-Argon and Helium are used in welding, the form a blanket over the hot metal to stop it reacting with oxygen.

-Argon is used in fire-extinguishing systems because it is NON-FLAMMABLE.

-Helium has a low density, so is used for filling balloons and airships (it floats)

-Neon is often used in fluorescent lamps and advertising displays- it produces a red coloured light when electricity is passed through it.
