the trends

AS YOU GO DOWN:

bigger atoms - ONE EXTRA FULL SHELL OF ELECTRONS FOR EACH ROW YOU GO DOWN

MORE REACTIVE - BECASUE THE OUTER ELECTRON IS MORE EASILY LOST BECAUSE ITS FURTHER FROM THE NUCLEUS

HIGHER DENSITY - HIGHER DENSITY BECASUE THE ATOMS HAVE MORE MASS, THE THREE AT THE TOP ARE LESS DENSE THAN WATER

LOWER MELTHING POINT

LOWER BOILING POINT

porpeties

they are very reactive - have to be stored in oil becasue they react with the air around it

2 of 4

properties

THEY ALL HAVE ONE OUTER ELECTON - AND FORM AN IONIC BOND

3 of 4

properties

  • They react with water to produce hydrogen gas
  • when lithium, sodium and potassium are put in water, they react vigorously
  • they move around the surface, fizzing furiously
  • They produce hydrogen, potassium aslso gets hot enough to ignite it
  • they would form a hydroxide in solution
