Crime

Bank Robbery-

  • Banks held a large amount of cashto buy gold from the miners. 
  • Before the railroad, the money was transported in stage coaches. 
  • The coaches were really easy targets for gunmen.

Stealing-

  • Miners would steal gold/money from each other

Claim jumping-

  • Miners could 'Stake a Claim' by hammering wooden stakes into the ground at an area of ground, then registering it. 
  • If gold was discovered there, people may steal the land by taking the stakes or the land.

Shooting-

  • Everyone carried guns so disputes often ended in a shooting.
