Total institutions - i.e. prisons, mental institutions etc. Mortification - humiliations, strips inmates of all the support they would get outside - they leave the support of the outside world outside.
Compulsory activities controlled by staff means they are stripped of their freedom. Everything they do is assessed by who they are and what they have done. They are treated as a label.
Become institutionalised - they cant function in the outside world. They have to relearn how to live.
They are not used to having the freedom to express anything.
Putting someone in a total institution doesn’t make them less deviant but more deviant.
