Ionic Structures CsCl and NaCl

Explain how sodium chloride and caesium chloride are different in terms of arrangement of the particles.

  • In order to maximise electrostatic attraction and to minimise repulsion
  • oppositely charged ions pack around each other
  • which increase the bond energy
  • 8 chloride anions can fit around the larger caesium ions
  • While the smaller sodium ions can only fit around 6
  • CsCl is an 8:8 ratio
  • NaCl is a 6:6 ratio
