NAZI RISE TO POWER

The Munich Putsch                                                                                      On the night of 8 November 1923, Hitler and 600 stormtroopers burst into a meeting Kahr and Lossow were holding. Waving a gun at them, Hitler forced them to agree to rebel and then let them go home. 9 November 1923, Hitler and his Nazis went into Munich to take power. However, Kahr had called in police and army reinforcements. The police killed 16 Nazis. Hitler was arrested two days later. sentenced 5 years but served 9 months.                                            The Reichstag Fire                                                                                     10pm on 27th February 1933, the Reichstag building was on fire. A young communist Marinus van der Lubbe was discovered on the premises. Small fires had been started around the building and in the great chamber. Van der Lubbe and four other communists were arrested. This lead to Hitler using the reichstag fire to arrest communists and gain 44% of the votes.

The Night of the Long Knives                                                                                                          The purge of certain members of the Nazi Party from June 30th to July 2nd in 1934. This event occurred over a series of days and entailed the Nazi regime’s murder of those Hitler considered to be political enemies.  Those killed during these events included leaders such as Kurt von Schleicher, Gustav Ritter von Kahr, and Gregor Strasser. NAZI ECONOMIC, SOCIAL & RACIAL POLICY

Reduce unemployment                                                                                                      The National Labour Service- all men aged 18-25 spend 6 months in the RAD. Rearment- Built up armed forces.  All strikes were banned and workers given high wages, job security and programs.

The volkswagen scheme- where workers would be given on opportunity to pay 5 marks a week towards a car. The scheme went wrong because cars were set to be delivered by 1940 but war broke out in 1939 and time went into making machinery.

KDF(3740 hrs) - Cruise ships(hardest workers), over 7 million took part in sport matches, had its own band that toured, were plays and musicals. There was also free evenings for adults to learn new things, 3 week tours of Italy and best hotels and skiing or walking holidays in the Alps.

Women                                                                                                           Ideals were that they didn't wear makeup, were blonde, heavy hipped and athletic. They wore flat shoes and a full skirt. They did not smoke, work or have an interest in politics and did all houshold duties. They should have at least 4 children and a large family.

TREATMENT OF JEWS

Jews

Hitler thought they were the reason for defeat in WW1, hyperinflation and the depression. The 2 main races were the master race(pure Germans) and the subhumans(jews). Hitler said he found this in the Bible

Kristallnacht

8 November, 1938, young polish jew, Herschel Grynszpan, went to the German Embassy in France and shot first official he met due to the treatment of jews and his parent at the time. Goebbels used this and created attacks on 9-10 of Nov on jewish property including synagogues.

Hitler blaimed the jews themselves for this and decreed that they all pay 1 billion marks, that they couldnt run their businesses and couldnt attend aryan schools. Jews were evicted and sent the ghettos then finally in the end concentration camps.
