Subjunctive 2 - USE

  • Hypothetical statements:

Er wäre glücklich, wenn sie hier wäre - He would be happy is she were here

  • Wenn can sometimes be omitted. The sentence then normally begins with the subordinate clause, with the verb preceding the subject. The following main clause is usually introduced by dann or so.
  • Wishes :

Ich wünschte, ich hätte mer Zeit für dich - I wish I had more time for you

  • Polite Requests

Hätten Sie heute Zeit? - Would you have some time today?

  • Speculation and doubt:

Sie könnten nun in New York gelandet sein - They could have landed in New York by now

Subjuntive 2 - FORMATION - PAST

PAST: (two word)

  • ich würde
  • du würdest
  • er/sie/es würde
  • wir würden
  • ihr würdet
  • sie/Sie würden

PAST: (one word)

Derived from the simple past of the indicative:

  • For weak verbs it is identical to the regular simple past
  • For irregular weak verbs (mixed verbs) it is the same as the simple past, but with an Umlaut or vowel change
  • For strong verbs an Umlaut is adde to the past tense stem of the verb and the ebndings -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en

The pluperfect subjunctive consists of the Subjunctive 2 past forms of haben or sein, plus the past participle of the verb.

Wir hätten dir gern geholfen - We would have liked to help you

Sie wäre länger geblieben, wenn du gekommen wärst - She would have stayed longer if you had come
