Tourism for the Rich
Tourism was once just for people with lots of money - the "rich" members of society.
It used to be that all foreign travel (travelling between countries) was done by sea. The tourists would stay at their destination for a number of weeks, and some would even go to several countries to stay a period of time.
But this stopped with the introduction of the package holiday, which meant that food, travel, and accommodation were all included in one price. This meant that cheaper holdiays were possible, and now millions of people could join in with tourism.
The development of air travel also helped this to develop, as now it wasn't just sea travel that made tourism possible.
Even today tourism is becoming increasingly affordable with technological advancements that allow the cost of flights to be brought down, and poorer people to be able to travel to places worldwide.
