Industrial accedient

What happened?

  •   During the early hours of December 3rd 1984 the world’s worst industrial accident unfolded in the Indian city of Bhopal.
  •   A poisonous gas escaped from a chemical plant run by an American company called ‘Union Carbide’ because a chemical reaction happened which caused temperatures to rise to over 200 degrees, this caused the reactor to blow up and the chemicals to escape
  •    A huge gas cloud of carbon monoxide and other chemicals then entered the atmosphere poisoning the residents of the area

What were the effects?

  • 3000 people were killed
  •      Some unofficial estimates say that in fact between 8000 and 10000 people were killed
  • 50,000 people suffered debleting injuries which they died of later in life.

Susteinable Urban Living

Location:

  • Beddington, near wallington in south london
  • 5 mintues walk away from the train station
  • 15 mintue walk to tramlink with services to wimbolon or croyden

Charactics:

  • Low carbon development
  • Has 100 homes which have heating needs at only 10% of typical UK home requirements and are energy and water efficient
  • 10% of construction materials came from waste timber, doors, kerb stones and paving

why is there susteinabilty:

  • Use of recycled construction materials has reduced amount of waste going to landfill sites
  • People sign up to be part of a ‘car club’ – this means they share cars and only drive them when absolutely necessary – this has reduced mileage of the average car club member by half, reducing the amount of pollution created.

Extreme Environment

Attractions:

  • People want to see the amazing scenery, icebergs and the sheer white brilliance of Antarctica
  • They also want to see animals such as penguins, seals and other birds in their natural environment rather than just on TV (TV programs such as ‘March of the Penguins’ are seen as signfcant reasons why visitor numbers have increased)
  • Most people come on Cruise Ships which adds to their experience on the holiday which is normally between mid-November and mid-March
  • People mainly want to see an area of outstanding beauty which due to global warming is under threat and may not be there forever

Impacts:

  •     Large ships carrying up to 400 people cause pollution and in worst cases can become stuck on rocks/icebergs and cause oil spills
  •     Large groups of people scare the wildlife and the more keen they are to hunt these animals out the worse the impact on the environment will be – rocks/ice can also be eroded
  • Not only are the animals affected but also people can tread on the small plants which grow – these as well as animals can also be impacted by littering

UK Tourism

Reasons Blackpool grew in popularity:

  •  Introduction of railways meant area was accessible to people living in cities such as Manchester/Liverpool – now only a short trip away
  • Introduction of paid annual holidays in Victorian times also led to more people spending a week there
  • Blackpool’s main draw was the long sandy beach which stretched for miles
  •   As popularity grew more and more tourist facilities were built such as the promenade, piers, large hotels and the Tower
  • Growth continued into the 1960s

Reasons for Decline:

  •   Cheap flights to Mediterranean made this most popular location for UK holidaymakers due to guaranteed sun/warmth – also Blackpool’s beaches/seas became polluted, overcrowded on bank holidays
