What is gentrification

The conversion of previously working class inner city districts into areas of middle class residence

How does it occur:

when an ageing inner city housing area is in need of improvement and revovation

The burgess model

The city is divided into series of concentric zones around the CBD. Lower income groups in the inncer city and middle class in the outer districts

  • the oldest housing is closest to the CBD
  • The newest housing is further away, new housing is classes as superior to old.

gentrification is occuring as there is a rise in managed jobs and there are longer hours of working which means no community time.
