  • it was hit by a torpedo that dd not explode
  • USS Maddox fires the torpedo boats
  • US fighter planes sink one torpedo boat and damage 2 more

4th august

  • USS Maddox and USS Turner joy report that they had been fired upon and attacked by torpedo boats
  • later reported that no sailor on boared ship or fiighter piolet in the air saw any evidence of the second attack
  • johnson ordered air force to attack north vietnamese gun boat bases.
