Benefits and risks of selective breeding

Advantages -

  • It eliminates diseases within plants and animals. It can result in breeds that are superior. Its easy to start and alows for a higher profit. Creates a variation of new crops.

Disadvantages

  • All organisms are very similar, so if conditions change all will be affected.
  • You loose alleles.
  • Animal warefare problems
  • Limited gentic variation.
  • Possiblity of gentic mutation

Genetically engineered Organisms

Agriculture - Crops can be genetically modified to be resistent to herbicides. Making crops herbicide resistent means farmers can spray their crops to kill weed swithout effecting the crop itself. This increase crop yield

Medicine - Genetically engineered bacteria is used to produce human insulin. Reasearchers have managed to transfer human genes that process useful protiens into sheep and cows. For example human antibodies used in therapy for arthiritis
