Stalin intended to impose a total blockade of West Berlin to force the west in surrendering their sectors- creating a united Berlin in soviet zone.
23 June USSR severed all rain, road and canal links from West Berlin to the Western zones.
USA + Britain needed to airlife supplies to its population of 2 mil (food, fuel, medicine).
Airlift began on 26 June- aircraft landed every 90 seconds + delivered 8,000 tonnes of supplies   day.
Many 1949 after 322 days + 5 mil packages of donations Stalin called of the blockade

Displayed the wests commitment to protecting the population + maintaining military presence in WB.
Western allies co-ordinated their armed forces- NATO 1949.
