musicals
musicals are meant to be entertaining and easy to listen too.
-the tunes are easy to sing- as the audience finds this more entertaining to sing along to.
- the harmonys are diatonic- it will be either major or minoe
- the stucture will be simple often with alternating verses and chorus and maybe a middle 8 ( has new chords and new lyrics and a change of mood to keep it interesting)
- the chorus will have a hook- a catchy bit of lyric for the audience to hold onto.

- solo charachter song- singing about how they are feeling
- duet
- action song- tell you whats going on in the plot
- chorus number- the whole cast sing together
west side story

- it is set in new york in the 1950
- it is based upon the story of romeo and juliet
- there are two rival gangs- the jets and the sharks
- it is quite different to other musicals at the time, as it had a sad ending.
- it is written for a big orchestra.
- instruments include: saxaphones, piano, electric guitar, mandolin, and celeste. as well as brass, wind, and strings. also percusion, timpani and glocenspeil.
- tony is sung by a tenor
