What is the Nicene Creed?

  • The Nicene Creed is a belief that the Father and Son have always existed together; meaning the Son has no begining or end but eternal. ('Co-eternal, Co-equal one of nature.')
  • It was  a scripture stated by the Council of Nicea in 325CE.
  • The Nicene Creed is basically a statement of belief. The Nicene Creed is a Christian Staement of belief that sums up the main Christian beliefs.
  • The significance of theTrinityis expressed deeply thorugh the Nicene Creed. e.g. God as the Father. God as the Son. God as the Son and God as the Holy SpiritRelated image

What is the Trinity?

  • In the Catechism it states:"The Trinity is one, we do not confess three Gods, but one God is three persons"-CCC 253
  • The Catholic Church teaches that there is one God who reveals himself through history as three persons; The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This means that there is only one God. The Father is God, the Son is God and the Holy Spirit is God- but they are not the same as eachother. This is called the Trinity; as said in the Catechism.
  • God is all loving- Omnibenevolent
  • All powerful- Omnipotent
  • All Knowing- Omniscient

Beliefs on Creation?

  • There are two accounts of Creation in Christianity.
  • Catholics believe Genesis 2 is a more detailed account of the 'Earth Created In Seven Days'- when God created Man. (According to Genesis 1 it was on the 6th Day.)
  • In Genesis, Catholics see God as Father who creates everything. "God said 'Let there be light' and there was light."- Genesis 1:3
  • The Holy Spirit is also present in the Creation, "the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters"- Genesis 1:2.
  • Genesis 3 describes the first sin of Adam and Eve, it introduces the Idea of Sin leading to the suffering if humans disobey God. This is called 'Original Sin'.
