The Gestapo

The Gestapo was the secret police- its job was 'to protect public safety and order', but their methods included harsh interogations and imprisonment without trial.

Joseph Goebbels

Goebbels founded the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propoganda in 1933.
he was hitler's Minister of Propoganda

it had departments for:

  • music
  • theatre
  • film
  • literature
  • radio

all artists, writers, journalists and musicians had to register to get their work approved.

Dawes Plan

the Dawes Plan was signed in 1924. Stressemann made france and Belgium withdraw from the Ruhr, and agreed more realistic payment dates for the reparations. the USA lent Germany £40 million to help it pay off its debts.

Locarno Pact

  • signed in 1925
  • Germany, France and Belguim agreed to respect their joint borders- this included the ones created by the Treaty of Versailles.

Treaty of Versailles

  • signed on 28th June 1919.

  • there were 4 MAIN terms:
  • Blame- Germany took the blame for WW1
  • Reparations- they paid a bill to repair after WW1
  • Armed forces- they were allowed a maximum of 100,000 troops, 15,000 navy personnel, 6 battleships and submarines were BANNED!
  • Territory- see this in the link!
  • you may notice the first letters of these are in bold. that's because it makes the mnemonic BRAT.

League of Nations

it allowed Germany to join in 1926. Germany was re-established as an INTERNATIONAL POWER!

kellogg-Briand Pact

signed by Germany in 1928, with 65 other countries. they promised to never use violence to settle disputes.

the Young Plan

agreed in 1929. the allies agreed reduce the reparations to a quarter of the amount, and Germany was given 59 years to repay them.
