Gardner and Gardner aimed to study language acquisition by seeing if a chimp could learn American Sign Language. Also, if a chimp could use vocabulary, transfers, differentiation and combinations.

Researchers have been interested in language aqusition and why it seems to be exclusive to humans. There has also been an ongoing debate on the difference between language and communication. (E,g. Waggle bees dance)
