Formation and use

Most verbs are made up of the verb AVOIR and the PAST PARTICIPLE. 

When you are talking about something that happened at a specific time in the past.

e.g. hier soir, j'ai regardé un film (last night I watched a film).

Forming the past participle

For ER verbs, take of the er and add é (manger becomes mangé, regarder becomes regardé)

For IR verbs, take off the r (finir becomes fini, dormir becomes dormi)

For RE verbs, take off the re and add u (répondre becomes répondu, attendre becomes attendu)

Irregulars

avoir - eu etre - été voir - vu lire - lu vouloir - voulu pouvoir - pu

faire - fait boire - bu prendre - pris

Verbs that take être

Aller, venir, arrier, partir, rester, tombre, rentre. 

Formation

Être + past participle. Remember to agree the subject of the verb (+e or es)

Formation and use

Take the nous form of the present tense and remove the 'ons' ending. Then add the imperfect endings:

je - ais tu - ais il/elle/on - ait nous - ions vous - iez  ils/elles - aient

j'habitais tu habitais il habitait nous habitions vous habitiez ils habitaient

You use the imperfect tense to describe what was happening (e.g it was raining), what used to happen (I used to play football) or what was ongoing when something else happened (I was watching tv when someone rang).

Common examples

Je voulais - I wanted J'avais - I had J'allais - I was going  Je dormais - I was sleeping

Être in the imperfect

All verbs except être are regular in the imperfect tense.

The stem of être becomes ét-. To this you add the imperfect endings.

j'étais tu étais il/elle/on était nous étions vous étiez ils/elles étaient

Near future tense

Formation and use

When you're talking about what you're GOING to do, use the verb aller and the infinitive.

Je vais aller - I am going to go

Aller

je vais tu vas il/elle/on va nous allons vous allez ils/elles vont

Futur tense

The futur tense is made from infinitive + futur tense endings.

-er verbs - manger - je mangerai (I will eat)

-ir verbs - finir je finirai (I will finish)

-re verbs - répondre - je répondre (I will reply)

The endings are the same as the present tense of avoir except from the nous and vous form.

je - ai tu - as il/elle/on - a  nous - ons  vous - ez ils/elles - ont 

Irregular verbs

aller - irai avoir - aurai être - serai  faire - ferai pouvoir - pourrai vouloir - voudrai

Formation and use

The conditional is used to say what you would do or making suggestions.

Je voudrais - I would like je jouerais - I would play  on pourrait - we could ...

The conditional uses the same stem (usually the infinitive) with the same endings as the imperfect tense.

manger - je mangerais finir - je finirais  vendre - je vendrais

You may meet the conditional after si (if)

Si tu mangeais correctement, tu n'aurais plus faim. (if you ate properly, you wouldn't be hungry).

Irregular conditionals

aller - j'irais avoir - j'aurais  être - je serais faire - je ferais

 pouvoir - je pourrais voir - je verrais  vouloir - je voudrais 

The endings are always the same:

je mangerais tu mangerais il/elle mangerait nous mangerions vous mangeriez

ils/elle mangeraient

Modal verbs can be used together with the infinitive of another verb.

Pouvoir - to be able to

je peux tu peux il/elle/on peut  nous pouvons vous pouvez ils/elles peuvent

je peux aller au cinéma (I can go to the cinema)

Vouloir - to want to

je veux tu veux il/elle/on veut nous voulons vous voulez ils/elles veulent

je veux manger à la pizzeria (I want to eat at the pizzeria)

Devoir - to have to

je dois tu dois il/elle/on doit nous devons vous devez ils/elles doivent

je dois étre à l'heure (I have to be on time)

Savoir (to know how to)

je sais tu sais il/elle/on sait  nous savons vous savez ils/elles savent

je sais faire du ski (I know how to ski)
