Auxiliary Verb
For a normal verb in the past tense we use 'avoir' - the verb 'to have':
J'ai - I have
Tu as - You have
il a - he has
Elle a - she has
Nous avons - We have
Vous avez - You (pl.) have
ils ont - They (masc.) have
Elle ont - They (fem.) have
Past Participle
There is a formula to form the past regular verbs:
- Er verbs:
remove '-er' and add 'é'
Example: jouer - joué (to play - played)
- Ir verbs:
remove '-ir' and add 'i'
Example: choisir - choisi (to choose - chose)
- Re verbs:
remove '-re' and add 'u'
Example: attendre - attendu (to wait - waited)
Auxiliary Verb + Past Participle
