Freeze-Thaw

1. Water gets trapped in a crack in the rock

2. If it is cold at night, the water will freeze, expanding and therefore putting pressure on the rock

3. In the daytime, the water will melt again and the rock contracts

4. Over time, the process will repeat and the rock weakens as the crack is widened and eventually shatters / breaks

Onion Skin

1. The hot days cause the rock to expand

2. The freezing nights cause the rock to then contract

3. The process repeats, causing the rock to waken and the surface layers to peel off

4. Wind / sandstorms can also gradually erode it
