Rodin 'The Burghers of Calais' (1884-95)

Context

  • Commissioned by Calais government for Seige of Calais 1347 - Edward III forced 6 burghers to come surrender keys in rope and sack, lives spared by Queen Phillippa (for baby)
  • Government disappointed by lack of elegence, 1913 England also got a copy

Modern Approach

  • Inner psyche- against realism, unidealised - rough surface reflects inner turmil
  • Bronze (good for detail), emphasises individuality and expressions of every man
  • Don't look at each other - self-absorded inner struggle
  • On ground level, unheroic, we seen them on our level

Influences

  • Donatello's 'The Prophet Habbakuk' modelled on mad preachers, same psychological realism
  • Michelangelo's 'Dying Slave'
