Principles of Biological control

Using organisms to kill problem organisms such as pests or weeds.

Fertiliser: Substances that add plant neutrients to soil such as artificial fertilisers containing  nitrogen or manure.

Why do we need biological control?

The human population continuses to grow, we needto use all the methods we have to increase food production.

How does biological control help to increase crop

Using organisms to control pests is a great way to increase crop yeild as they get rid of pests and weeds that harm crops. This means that the crop yield will increase as they have no threat.

How can biological control cause problems?

Sometimes the organisms can eat the native predators. This would effect the natural food chain and could lead to some species becomming extinct.

if you're looking to completely wipe out a pest, biological control is not the right choice. Predators can only survive if there is something to eat, so destroying their food population would risk their own safety. Therefore, they can only reduce the number of harmful pests.

How can fertilisers damage the environment?

If not all the fertiliser is absorbed by a crop, some may get into nearby streams and rivers and lakes. This can cause pollution and lead to the death of organisms in the water system.
