Family groups

  • household - person living alone or a group of people living at the same address
  • monogamy - husband and 1 wife
  • serial monogamy - series of monogamous marragies
  • arranged marriage - marriages arraged by parents
  • polygamy - marriage to more than 1 partner at a time
  • polygyny - 1 huband and 2 or more wives
  • polyandry - 1 wife and 2 or more husbands
  • nuclear family - 2 generations, parents and children living in the same household
  • extended family - all kin including and beyond nuclear family
  • horizontally extended - brothers and sisters
  • vertically extended - 3 generations
  • classic extended family - more than 2 generations, sharing same hosehold or living close by
  • modified extended family - live far away but keep in touch
  • patriarchal family - authority held by males
  • matriarchal family - authority held by women

  • symmetrical family - authority and tasks shared equally between male and female partners
  • reconstituted or step family - 1 or both partners were previously married with children from those marriages
  • lone parent famalies - lone parent with children, usually after divorce
  • gay and lesbian famalies - same sex couple with children
  • single person household - an individual living alone
  • bean pole famalies - 1 grandparent, 1 parent, 1 child
