Family - definition

A couple who's relationship is based on marriage, civil partnership, or cohabitation  (live together) with or without dependant children, or a lone parent and their child(ren).

Household- definition

A house where people share at least one meal a day in a communal area

e.g, student flat, homeless shelter. Not together, related ect.

Types of Family

NUCLEAR - the 'ideal' family. White, mum & dad, 2 children. (modern dont have to be married)

EXTENDED - parents & grandchildren, aunties & uncles

LONE PARENT - one parent takes care of child, mother doesn't marry father of child, divorce couple who have children

RECONSTITUTED - re-married with step-parents and children

SAME SEX - marriage/civil partnership between 2 males/2 females

EMPTY NEST - when chiuldren have grown up and left home

BEANPOLE - when a couple has one child, that child gets married and also has one child, and so on.

CEREAL PACKET - when a Nuclear Family is presented in the media. Mum stays home, dad goes out to work.

Key Terms

SOCIALISATION - the process by which we learn how to behave and fit into a society or culture

CULTURE - the way of life of a group of people, things that are shared by the members of society  e.g, the way we dress or the food we eat

NORMS - the expected ways to behave. What we should and shouldn't do 

                e.g eating with a knife and fork instead of our fingers.

VALUES - ideas that we consider important, beliefs about what is good and worthwhile

                 e.g, success is important, murder is wrong

ROLES - the parts we play in society. All roles have norms attatched. 

               e.g, son, daughter, teacher, parent, friend.

STATUS - the amount of prestige or social standing that a person has in society.

                 e.g, occupation - teacher, lawyer, bus driver

Hegemonic Masculine Characteristics:

  • immature
  • rude
  • aggressive
  • emotionless
  • strong/tough

Hegemonic Female Characteristics:

  • caring
  • compassionate
  • emotional
  • stylish
  • mature
