Why are they added?

What kinds are there?

Water repellent; stops water droplets getting through.
Stain resistance; stops grease and dirt penetrating fabric.
Anti-static; encourages fabric to absorb moisture from the atmosphere.
Flame resistance; makes it less likely to catch fire.
Hygenic; prevents growth of micro organisms.
Rot proofing; prevents growth by adding PVC.
Anti-pilling; prevents loose fibres clumping together.
Easy care; takes much less ironing to get rid of creases.
