Exposure to Pollution

  • Pollutant- a substance that contamintates something such as air or water and may make it unsafe
  • Respiratory disorders- conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura and pleural cavity
  • Cardiovascular problems- any disorder or disease of the heart or blood vessels 
  • Pollutants in the environment include;
  • Nitrogen
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Methane
  • Aerosols
  • Sulfur Dioxide
  • Argon
  • Chlorine
  • Lead

  • Air and water pollution can influence development and be a major source of ill health 
  • Growing concern about the impact of quality and the contribution it makes to causing particular illnesses
  • The environment may contain many chemicals from vehicle exhaust systems and industrial emissions
  • Household pollutants include mould and cleaning products that emit poisonous gases
  • Repiratory disorders affect the nerves and muscles for breathing
  • Impacts on the lining of the air passages
  • Respiratory disorder's range from; a runny nose or a sore throat (mild), bacterial pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer (severe)

Exposure to Pollution 3

  • Cardiovascular problems can be caused by tobacco smoke which is linked to changes in the lining of the heart and blood vessels causing clots (thrombosis)
  • Air pollution has also been linked to an increased risk of thrombosis and a raised blood pressure
  • Exposure to pollution during pregnancy may be linked to the baby having a congenital defect and cardivascular disease later on in life
  • Allergies are caused by dust and pollen
  • The immune system overreacts 
  • Hay fever and asthma are allergies 
  • Hay fever is a seasonal reaction (runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing, these are flu-like symptoms)
  • Asthma can be miled to life threatening
  • 3 people a day die from asthma 
  • Motor vehicles produce pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides etc)
  • All of these can increase allergies
