Laboratory experiments

Strengths

  • Good control of extraneous variables
  • Causal relationships can be determined
  • Strict procedures allow for replication

Weaknesses

  • The artificial setting could have low ecological validity
  • Demand characteristics

Field experiments

Strengths

  • As participants are in their natural setting their behaviour is likely to be representative
  • Participants could be unaware they're in an experiment  reducing demand characteristics

Weaknesses

  • Control over extraneous variables is harder reducing reliability
  • The researcher can't be sure the changes in the DV were caused by the IV
  • Ethical issues if participants don't know they're in an experiment

Quasi-experiments

Strengths

  • If participants are in their normal setting their behaviour will be natural/representative
  • If participants are unaware they're in a study this will reduce demand characteristics
  • Allows research into things that would be impractical or unethical to manipulate

Weaknesses

  • Only possible where natural differences arise
  • Control over extraneous variables can be hard
  • Can't establish causal relationships as the IV is not directly manipulated
  • Harder to replicate
