Evaluations of the biological approach

?

Strength of using scientific methods.

  • The bilogical approach uses highly reliable scienfitic methods to draw the inferences off.
  • For example drug trials and PET scans.
  • This is important as these are usually quite reliable methods to getting data.
  • This makes the results more internal valid.

Real-life applications.

  • The bilogical approach has increased the development of pschoactive drugs that help treat mental dissoreders.
  • For example Depression
  • However, these drugs have not been proven effective for everyone.
  • Regardless of this the development of medical drugs has revolutionarised the way paitents with mental dissorders.
  • This is a massive strength for the biological approach as it has real-life benefits.

Associations not a cause

  • Neurotransmitters in paticular mental illnesses are changed by drugs, therefore changing the levels and reducing the mental illness.
  • Biopsychologists believe that the neurotransmitter is the cause.
  • However, this may be false.
  • For example the cause of a headache isn't lack of paracetamol.
  • Therefore an association may have only been discovered.

Determinist

  • The biological approach expresses that our behaviour is the result of internal causes.
  • This is very difficult to believe and puts doubt on the biological approach.
  • Furthermore, this contradicts the legal system that imposes criminals are responsible for there crimes.
  • Recent discovery of the 'criminal' gene has lead to confusion in the legal system and given criminals an excuse for there behaviour.

Separation of nature and nurture.

  • MZ and DZ twins have genetic similarites.
  • So the biological approach suggests that any behaviour that is similar is due to genetics.
  • However, sibiling share very similar enviorments and lifes espically MZ twins.
  • This creates confusion on what is nature and what is nurture.
