Ghumann

  • Researched British-Asian identities
  • Found tradition, religion and family values played an important part in the upbringing of second-generation Asians in the UK
  • Asian children tend to be socialised into the extended family
  • They put emphasis on duty, loyalty, honour and religious commitment

Gilroy

  • Looked at the identity of young black people
  • Said they shared experience of racism and powerlessness
  • He said this means they can create their own identity
  • This links to what is known as 'Black Atlantic' showing it is not rooted in the UK

Spencer

  • Found that many ethnic minorities are white with ethnic origins from Eastern Europe
  • There is evidence they face similar issues of resentment and racism
  • They spend little time socialising with British people
  • This is because 'they do not let others in their circles'
  • Eastern European people tend to stick together and form their own identity
  • They feel British people did not welcome them into their groups

Cashmore & Tronya

  • Argue that ethnic minorities 'turn inwards'
  • They do this to support each other as a form of protection
  • Therefore identity, culture and religion are strengthened
  • Winston James supports this by saying that experience of racism unifies cultures

Jacobson

  • Further supports Cashmore and Tronya
  • Says that young Muslims form a strong identity
  • This is a response to the exclusion they feel from the rest of society
  • This effects their diet, dress and religious practise
  • They tend to form a completely different identity to others in UK society
  • This then leads to British removing themselves even further away from the ethnic minority group
  • They do not see that they have anything in common with them

Hewitt

  • Talks about 'multiculturalism'
  • This is when policies have been designed to get equality in society
  • But white working class communities see this as unfair to the white community
  • This is because it puts them under more pressure to get jobs
  • They feel ethnic minorities are favoured and get special treatment
  • Here, an identity is formed amongst themselves
  • This then creates tenion between ethnic groups

Modood

  • Believes that generations feel differently about identity
  • Second generation ethnic minorities feel they have more of a British identity than their parents
  • This could be due to the fact they have been intergrated into British society from a younger age in schools
  • Therefore, they follow British norms and values much easier, as it has always been part of their everyday life
  • Also, they will have learnt the British language from birth
  • Therefore, they use it more frequently than their parents or grandparents

Postmodernism

  • Believe that due to globalisation and media, people are creating their own identities
  • This is where hybrid identity starts with people choosing their own identities and shaping it themselves
  • They believe that because of this, ethnicity as an identity isn't as important as it used to be
  • People see other factors of their identity as more significant
