Divorce and Remarriage

Christians do not condone divorce because marriage is a lifelong commitment and a covenant with God.

Matthew 5:31-32, during the Sermon on the Mount. "Those who remarry are adulterous."

  • Christians believe that people should not divorce or remarry as Jesus said to divorce was to adulter.
  • This is because Christians believe marriage is a lifelong commitment. "Til death do us part."
  • The only acceptable reason for divorce is if the woman has been adulterous. (Roman Catholics)
  • The Orthodox Church allow remarriage, as it is better for one to be married to their partner than for them to not be married to their partner.

The Roles of Men and Women in Christianity

Women are to care for the home and children. "Wives submit to your husbands." 1 Peter 3:1-7.

The men are in charge. "I will make a helper suitable for a man." Genesis 2:15

Husband and wife are equal. "There is neither man or woman, for you are all for one in Jesus Christ." Galatians 3:28

In some accounts Jesus treats women equally. For example Luke 8:43-48, Jesus heals the bleeding woman.

However in the New Testament it is inconsistent as to what people really think of women.

Sex Before Marriage is Wrong

Christians believe that sex before marriage is wrong as it goes against the ten commandments.

Sex before marriage is adulterous.

Sex is only to be had in the married state, in order to procreate.

Sex is only for after marriage. 'That is why a man leaves his father and his mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.' Genesis 2:24

Christian Attitudes to Contraception

Roman Catholics would not agree with contraception, apart from the rhythm method.

In Genesis 1, God commanded that his creation be, 'fruitful and increase in number.'

Using contraception changes the purpose of sex, and goes against Gods divine plan.

Contraception goes against the Sancitity of Life (life is special and sacred, a God given gift.)

Roman Catholics would disagree strongly with abortion or the morning after pill, as they end a life, and go against the idea of 'ensoulment.'

Ensoulment is the idea that the soul begins at implantation. (Roman Catholics only).

"Even before uou were, I knew you." Isaiah (Old Testament)
