The way people pronounce words.  It can vary between different countries, regions and social backgrounds.

Alliteration.

 Where consonants are repeated.  It’s often used in poetry to give a nice pattern to a phrase.  E.g. Sally’s slipper slipped on a slimy slug.

When words share the same vowel sound, but the consonants are different.  E.g. Lisa had a piece of cheese before she went to sleep, to help her dream.

contrast

When two things are described in a way which emphasises how different they are.  E.g. A poet might contrast two different places, or two different cultures.

dialect

Regional variation of a language.  People from different places might use different words or different sentence constructions.  E.g.  In some northern English dialects, people might say “Ey up” instead of “hello”.

The choice of words used.  The language determines the effect the piece of writing will have on the reader, e.g. it can be emotive or persuasive.

The way a piece of writing is visually presented to the reader.  E.g. what king of font is used, whether there are sub-headings and bullet points, how the verses in a poem are broken up, whether sentences or lines are arranged regularly, whether they create some kind of visual pattern etc.

metaphor

A way of describing something by saying that it is something else, to create a vivid image.  E.g. “His eyes were deep, black, oily pools.”
