Question 5 ~ Tips for success (story)

OSCCE    ~ Opening. Setting. Character. Crisis. Ending.

Ingredents for OSCCE

~ Narrative Hook. SADS. SADS. SADS + one line of dialogue. SADS. Cliff hanger/ link back to the beginning/ twist.

SADS     ~ Senses. Advanced Vocabulary. Devices. Sentence Structure.

Use sences to add detail and extend writing: touch, taste, sight, sound and feel.

Improve vovabulary to improve grade: use amazing adjectives, powerful verbs and effective adverbs.

Include devices to add detail: use metaphors, similes, personification and alliteration.

Use a range of sentances to make writing intersting: use PVA, short and complex sentances.

Question 5

  • They will be a choice of two questions, chose one.
  • They will be a picture as a stimulus/ for ideas/frame/ theme.
  • The choices will be descriptive or narrative.
  • The choice can either be both descriptive, both narrative or one of each.
  • The descriptive choice will be baised on the picture, you will need to describe it.
  • The narrative choice will ask you to write part of a story baised on a theme linked to the picture.
  • It is out of 40 marks.
  • 16marks are awarded for Spelling, Puntication and Grammer.

Question 5 ~ Descriptive

  • You need to be imaginative.
  • You need to use structure for effects.
  • You need to describe all the sences to help create a detailed picture in the readers mind.
  • You need to use top, middle, bottom super zoom.
  • You need to use figurative language. This is the use of language to go beyond the literel meaning; you do this by using a range of similies, metaphors and personifcation.
  • You need to establish the correct tone, for example a negative done for a dark picture and a postivie tone for a light picture. You do this by using aprorate vocabolry.
  • You need to use a rnage of sentences to set the correct tone. Short simple sentances create a fast paced tense atmosphere. Long complex sentances, create a relaxed atmosphere.

Question 5 ~ Narrative

  • You will ned to establish the correct narrative structure.
  • Within your opening you need to rememeber not to add much action.
  • You need to remember "show me don't tell me". This means you need to describe the event not just say the ovbious.
  • You need to remember less is more. The less action the better.
  • Try to add a flashback just before the heght of the crisis to add tension and build suspence.

Question 5 ~ Top Tips

  • You need to rememebr to plan before you start writting.
  • You need to think about structure, what will happen? and when will it happen?
  • You need to rememebr that at the end, if you have time, you need to go back over your work and re read it checking for errors or improvments you could make.

Timings

  • DON'T DO THE HIGHEST MARKS FIRST!
  • Each question builds of each other by getting you to look at each part of the text in detail.
  • Question 5 will be a smiliar theme as to what the sources are about.
  • You need to manage your timings well.
  • You need to spend round about 1 1/2 minutes per mark.
  • Spend 15 mintues reading the source. This leaves you with 90 minutes to get 80 marks.

Question 1

  • It is the exam boards "easy opener".
  • It is out of 4 marks so should aim to spend 5 minutes on it.
  • It asses you ability to identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas to select and synthesize evidence from diffrent texts.
  • Make sure you get your information from the correct lines. To avoid not draw a circle around the correct lines.
  • Ensure you pick out the correct topic. E.g.  if its about the wether only pick out the weather.
  • Paraphrasing is excaptiable.
  • Your answer have to be in in full sentances.
  • Make sure points are distinic and different form each other.

Question 2

  • It is an 8 mark question and should only take 10 minutes.
  • It is based on a wider part of the extract.
  • The bullet points should be used as a guide of what you need to write about.
  • You need to give a perspective. beyond obvious answer.
  • You need to include the effect on the reader.
  • The first bullet point ~ you need to pick out word class nouns and adjectives,etc, and what effect they give.
  • The second point is the use figurative language, this includes assonace, oxymorans, similies, idiom, puns, pathetic fallacy, onomatapia, symbolism, euphemism, personifaction, consomece, metaphors and hyperbole.
  • You need to follow the P.E.A structure (point, evidence, analyse).
  • The last point is sentence structure. You need to know and mention simple, compound, complex and compound complex sentence forms.
  • You need to comment on why certain sentence forms are used, i.e.e very long sentences create an overwelming atmosphere where as very short create tension.
  • You must anaylise key words and phrases.

Question 3 part 1

  • It is 8 marks so should take 10 minutes.
  • It is baised on the whole source.
  • It is focused on structure.
  • You need to include the effect on the reader.
  • Everything follows the same structure.
  • Expostion ~ Introducing the setting and the main chacters.
  • Raising action ~ A series of events to keep the reader intersted.
  • Climax ~ The main character comes face to face with the main problem.
  • Falling action ~ The  problem unravels and the hero either wins or loses.
  • Denouement ~ The fall out from how the characters deal with the climax.
  • However, the source will either be form the Expostion, Raising action or the climax.
  • You should do what the bullet points say.
  • DO NOT ANAYLSE LANGUAGE OR KEY WORDS!

Question 3 part 2

  • The first bullet point is about the opening of the extract. ~ How does the writter establish the setting and what does it focus on/ mean. ~ The shift and what does it focus on and tells us. ~ Why did they use/ do all this - did it delay the action. ~ Does it make you want to read on. ~ What is the topic.
  • The second bullet point is about how and why the focus changes throughout the extract. ~ Consider the diffrernt topic of each paragraph. ~ Why do they do this - is it to build tension? ~ Do they use flashbacks ~ does this add chaos, turmoil or something else?
  • The last bullet point is other structual features. You have got to find a structual devices for yourself. Is the reader being made uncomtible orwelcomed by the weather? ~ Do the paragraphs get longer or shorter? ~ This could reflect the wirters eximent or them being overwelmed?

Question 4

  • It is worth 20 markes, so you should spend 25 minutes writing and 5 minutes planning.
  • You need to evaluate the text criticaly with support from the text.
  • It is baised on an extract form the source.
  • You will be given an opinion from a student, our age, and asked to respond to it and write your about your own interpretations.
  • You have to evaluate how the writer created these interprtations.
  • You need to write about anything relevent i.e. lanaguage, tone or structure.
  • Use the bullet points as a check list of what you need to include in each paragraph.
  • You need to follow the P.E.A structure.
  • Do you agree with the statment - if so why- if not why not.
  • You should read the extract and highlight key quotes that link to the statement as evidence.
  • Then re read the extract again and highlight anything that doesn't agree with the statement - as the opposite side.
  • What parts of the quotes make you fell what, i.e. disagree or agree.
  • Do the quotes echo what the charcters feel or what is happening in the sence.
  • Your argument need to be balanced.
  • You must exhauste the quotes with anaylsis and keywords anaylsis with orginal ideas from behind the lines.  You must remeber to plan first!
