Metabolic Rate

Metabolic Rate is the rate at which your body uses engergy

The body gets its energy in the form of chemical energy from food

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - the rate you Burn Energy at rest

  • BMR tells you the minimum energy you need to stay alive
  • To measure someones BMR they need to go without food for about 12 hours and then be at rest. The amount of heat energy generated by their body is measured over a certain time.

Factors that effect BMR:

  • Age: BMR reduces with age
  • Body fat percentage: lowever your body fat - higher your BMR
    • Gender (females have higher body fat so lower BMR)
    • Exercise
  • Diet: Body reacts to a sudden reduction in energy by lowering the BMR so it needs less energy
  • External Tempuature: Exosure to cold makes the body increase its BMR so it keeps warm
