Energy Transfers

?

Types of Energy

Kinetic- the energy in moving objects

Heat- also called thermal energy

Light- also called radiation energy

Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)- energy stored in raised objects

Chemical- stored energy in fuels, food and batteries

Sound- energy released by vibrating objects

Electrical- energy in moving charges or static electric charges

Elastic Potential- stored energy in stretched or squashed objects

Nuclear- stored in the nuclei of atoms

Internal Energy- contained in thermodynamic system

Strain Energy- released when atoms in a molecule rearrange themselves in a chemical   reaction

Energy Transfer Diagrams

You can see the car engine transfers chemical energy, which is stored in the fuel, into kinetic energy in the engine and wheels.

Energy is input into a car engine in the form of chemical energy in the fuel. The energy is output in the form of kinetic energy in the engine and wheels. (http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zyxb87h/large)

This energy diagram shows energy transfer in an electric lamp. The lamp converts electrical energy into light energy.

Energy is input into an electric lamp in the form of electrical energy. The energy is output in the form of light energy. (http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/zvtrwmn/large)These diagrams only show the useful energy.

Sankey Diagrams

Sankey diagrams summarise all the energy transfers taking place in a process.

Sankey diagram for an electric lamp shows electrical energy is transfers into heat energy more than light.

100 joules of electrical energy is converted to 10 joules of light energy and 90 joules of heat energy (http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/bam/live/content/z3hcjxs/large)
