Energy Sources

HideShow resource information

Sources

  • solar, wave, electric, nuclear, oil, gas, wind, coal, hydro, thermal
  • energy is needed for transport, heating, cooking etc
  • 2007 - 85% of energy consumpiton was derived from fossil fuels which have been developed since the industrial revolution
  • before the industrial revolution, energy came from renewable sources
  • the three main types of energy sources:

- non-renewable - coal, oil and gas

- renewable - hydro, wind and solar

- recyclable

How do sources impact the environment?

Coal

  • it is the most polluting energy source
  • coal burning power plants have been asked to reduce their pollutants like nitrous oxide etc
  • CO2 is stil released from coal - there was 2 billion tonnes released from the USA alone

Oil - it releases CO2 when it is burnt

Gas

  • it releases CO2 when it is burnt
  • it is the least polluting fossil fuel
  • it is a methane rich gas

Nuclear

  • there is a health risk to using nuclear power sources
  • it is hard to get rid of nuclear waste
  • there is a risk of radiation

How do sources impact the environment?

Hydro-Electric Power

  • it is a renewable and recyclable energy source
  • it isnt suitable for everywhere
  • it is a very expensive source

Windpower

  • this is a renewable energy source
  • it is an unreliable source of energy and is very expensive
  • it doesnt cause any pollution or damage to the environment
  • NIMBYSM

Solar Energy

  • it is a renewable energy source
  • the distribution of solar panels vary
  • the technology is very expensive to set up

How do sources impact the environment?

geothermal

  • it is a renewable and recyclable energy source
  • it is only available in certain locations

biomass

  • it acts as a carbon sink
  • the combustion of the source releases carbon dioxide
  • it has a low energy density

tidal/wave energy

  • it is a renewable energy source
  • only certain locations are suitable for the use of this type of energy
