Energy Transfer

Energy cannot be created or destroyed but only changed from one form to another.

In transferring energy we usually end up with energy that we don't want which we call wasted energy. the energy we want is known as useful energy.

Example:

Light bulb = Electrical -> Light + Heat

                 (input)         (useful) (wasted)

Efficiency

Efficiency is how efficient something is when it comes to energy in and out put.

To calculate efficiency we use Eff.= useful energy out/input x100

National Grid

The national grid is a network of pylons and transformers which distribute electricity around the country.

To reduce energy loss in wires due to heat, we must reduce the current. To do this we use a step us transformer to increase the voltage and decrease the current.

This high voltage is dangerous in the home so a step-down transformer reduces the voltage to a safer level.

Pros and Cons of the National Grid

Pros of National Grid

  • Easy to control specific areas
  • Easier to repair
  • Reliable
  • Matches changing demands

Cons of National Grid

  • Highly interconnected
  • Easier to sabotage
  • Environmental damage is possible
  • Not pretty
