Gorbachev (85-91)

Aim: to save the USSR

Initial problems: 

  • Weak economy
  • Spending too much money eg Afghan War, Arms Race etc
  • Low popularity of Communism

Policies used to solve problems:

  • Glastnost-Freedoms eg freedom of speech and freedom to criticise government allowed
  • Perestroika- More economic freedom, less government control eg competition allowed
  • Arms talks with the US eg Washington talks where INF Treaty was made
  • INF Treaty scrapped mid-range nuclear missiles
  • "Sinatra Doctrine" removed troops from Satellite states and ended Brezhnev Doctrine
  • Gradually withdrew troops from Afghanistan

Fall of Communism

Fall of Berlin Wall

  • Communism unpopular-protests began to remove it
  • Economic problems eg lack of goods in shops and Perestroika made this worse
  • Public broke down the wall which was a political symbol of freedom and unity as it fell
  • Broken down wall was on 9th Nov 1989

Fall of the USSR

  • 1991- 9 hardline Communists decide to remove Gorbachev
  • Communists lose support
  • Coup failed and Communist party was banned but Gorby resigns 2 days later

Reagan (81-89)

  • Disagreed with Detente
  • Anti-Communist
  • Called the USSR an "evil empire"

Aim: to end the Cold War

Methods used:

  • Planned S.D.I or "Star Wars" to be used as an anti-nuclear defence
  • Put pressure on the USSR to make them back down 
  • Increased military defence spending
  • Adopted an aggressive rhetoric to threaten the USSR
